Observation templates are the forms used inside a lesson observation. There are three kinds — one for the observer, one for the student and one for the teacher — each with their own questions. Good templates keep every observation consistent and comparable.
Where to find it
Sidebar → Education → Lesson observations → Observation templates. (Or via the Manage templates button on the observations page.)
What you see at the top
Counter cards show the total number of templates and the counts per type (observer, student) plus how many are active. Tabs let you filter by type: All, Observer templates, Student templates and Teacher templates.
Step by step: creating a template
- Click New template at the top right.
- Give the template a name and choose the type (observer, student or teacher).
- Add the questions that need to be filled in.
- Set the template to active if it may be used right away, and optionally mark it as the default for its type.
- Save — the template is now selectable in a new observation.
Managing existing templates
- Edit — change the name and questions.
- Duplicate — make a copy (with "(Copy)" in the name) to quickly start a variant; the copy is inactive by default.
- Delete — with confirmation.
- Use the Active only toggle to hide deactivated templates from the list.
Tips
- Mark one default template per type — it is auto-selected in a new observation and saves clicks.
- Want to tweak a heavily used template? Duplicate first, test the variant, then activate.
- Deactivate old templates instead of deleting them, so completed observations keep their shape.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need all three types? For a complete observation, yes: when creating one you pick an observer, student and teacher template. So make sure there is at least one active template of each type.
Does an edit also change completed observations? No — an already filled observation keeps its answers as they were.
Can I switch a template off temporarily? Yes, set it to inactive; it is kept but no longer selectable.
Troubleshooting
- I don't see this page. The Lesson observations module is off for your organization. Ask your lead administrator to enable it.
- I can't manage templates. You lack the Manage students permission. A lead administrator can grant you this right.
- A template isn't selectable in a new observation. It is probably inactive — activate it first.
